G'Day Developers!

Ok, once a project gets going, you can end up dealing with many people on the client side. From the Boss to the Business Decision Maker (we call them the "Company Champion") through to Mary the receptionist (aka "users"), everyone has something to say about the software as it is being developed. However, when you are working on a Time & Materials basis in a rapid development environment with continually changing specs, you have to be certain that the work you are doing is authorised by the person who signs the cheques.

So, say Alan from Accounts would like the Username and Password authentication to have a "remember me" checkbox for the Accounts module. This sounds reasonable, but it doesn't mean that you should charge right in and start coding.

As an example, this is how we govern this process:

  • At the beginning of the project one of the client staff is assigned as Company Champion. This person has full authority from the Business Decision Maker of the client as to what work is IN or OUT. Every new item of work must be authorised by this Company Champion.

  • Whenever someone who ISN'T the Company Champion makes a request for work, the Company Champion must be CC'd. If Mary the receptionist has not done this, the developer sends the email again to himself, and CC's the Company Champion (CC'ing other relevant people - if they may give feedback on the task) to let them know about the request.

  • We make the assumption that the task is good to go, so it is the Company Champion's job to make sure that they reply ASAP if they don't want the problem fixed.

Subject: Changes Requested by Sophie

As per our conversation, Sophie has requested the following changes to your application: modifying rptContractRenewal to include the "MaidenName" field from the ClientContact Table, and positioning right next to the Surname field.

Please let us know ASAP if you don't want this problem fixed.

Thanks,
John

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (5:30pm-7pm)

The SharePoint Conference is coming to town between May 14 and 16 and anyone who is anyone is going to be there. The Sydney SharePoint User Group has joined with the Sydney .NET User Group, and managed to sneak in to the event to host the May User Group session.

The May .NET User Group meeting will be a Q&A session with Mike Fitzmaurice and Joel Oleson, both Microsoft Technical Product Managers for SharePoint Products and Technologies. You might remember Joel from his hugely popular User Group presentation last September. By all accounts, this promises to be another "standing room only" event.

Windows PowerShell (7pm-8pm)

Dave Glover will also be presenting Windows PowerShell

Microsoft Windows PowerShell command line shell and scripting language helps IT Professionals and Developers achieve greater productivity and automation and runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server "Longhorn". The shell includes an interactive prompt and a scripting environment that can be used independently or in combination.

Unlike most shells, which accept and return text, Windows PowerShell is built on top of the .NET common language runtime (CLR) and the .NET Framework, and accepts and returns .NET objects. This fundamental change in the environment brings entirely new tools and methods to the management and configuration of Windows, systems and business solutions.

The session is very interactive, lots of demos including working with the new Office Open XML File Formats with PowerShell, very cool indeed!!

Don’t forget that this month the User group will be on at the Hilton Hotel at 488 George Street on Wednesday May 16. We will be starting at 5:30pm and plan to wrap up by 7:00pm
